About Me

I originally began this blog in 2009 to document my travels in Europe by motorbike - Ireland, England, Wales, France, Belgium and Holland to name the countries I have toured - but I also wanted a way to record the small but interesting endeavors of everyday life and the site began to drift in that direction gradually.

I live in Carrigaline with my partner and son. My rented house is your typical semi-detached estate dwelling but with the added bonus of a lovely large back garden.

My first experiment in vegetable gardening was in 2011 with a starter kit of cherry tomatoes, where the plastic container full of soil doubled as a propagator. As I had no greenhouse, they spent most of their time outside and I had a lovely crop of ten green tomatoes in October. I think I managed to ripen them in a paper bag on the windowsill.  The next year I started to grow crops in two raised beds and progressed to carrots, Brussels sprouts, Chinese cabbage and a better crop of tomatoes in my new plastic mini greenhouse. I have been increasing my range of crops and plots every year.

In 2013 I completed the first year of the RHS Horticulture course with commendations in three out of four subjects. Along came my first baby, so I put the second year on hold, but I hope to resume classes this Autumn. I have completed various other short gardening and foraging courses locally.

I NEED TO UPDATE THIS! I DON'T EVEN LIVE IN CARRIGALINE ANYMORE! NEW YEAR'S RESOLUTION TO DO THIS IN THE NEXT FEW DAYS (It's 6/01/20 today!)

.....well it's only the end of March and I am getting around to updating my bio.

SO at the end of 2018 we bought a beautiful house with a beautiful huge garden on a beautiful rural road outside of Whitegate and Aghada in East Cork. Why am I, a West Cork woman who works in the city centre, settling at the other side of the county? Because the aforementioned partner hails from here and works here and I was more than happy to take a few years off work (it started at one year, it's been three and will most likely end up being five) for lots of reasons. And it's unbelievably gorgeous around here, more beaches than I can manage! Oh yes there has been another child added to (two boys in total - 6 and 3 years old as of 2020). I definitely thought I would be better at keeping up this blog but I was a lot more productive years ago. I'm writing this at 10pm because it is just not possible to whip out a laptop in front of a information-hangry child without having them both sitting on your lap after two minutes. I'd have been the same as a child, no hard feelings lads! I'm quite prepared for the growing season ahead so I hope I'll have good content and photos coming up.

Thanks for reading!

Oh p.s the "I hope to resume classes this Autumn" line I so eloquently threw out back in 2014 - pfffffft. My apologies to the younger, more ambitious me.
